Kerstin Smutny
For someone who is only 20 years old, Kerstin Smutny already has an impressive racing resumé with more than13 years of experience. From quarter midgets, to Formula TR, and even the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup Series, Smutny has competed in an abundance of different racing series, and she has excelled in all of them.
Smutny launched her racing career at seven years old competing in quarter midgets – she has continued to work through the open-wheel and road-course ranks ever since.
Throughout her time racing quarter midgets, she accumulated countless podium finishes in addition to five Quarter Midget Championships, and five different track records.
After seven years on the quarter midget circuit, Smutny decided it was time to take the next step in her racing career. In 2005 alone, she competed in the Formula TR 1600 series, tested a Formula BMW series car, and even raced 80cc Shifter Karts.
In the years that followed, she remained a fierce competitor in the Formula TR series while also running full-size midgets throughout the Northwest, and participating in USAC Western State races.
Most recently, Smutny raced in the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup Series at road-course tracks throughout the United States including Road America, Road Atlanta and Virginia International Raceway. Running against 30 highly competitive drivers for the championship title, Smutny finished 17th in the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup Series point standings.
Her on-track success has yielded countless honorable mentions and rewards including “Best Driver” at the Formula BMW USA licensing course in Valencia, Spain, a Lyn St. James Driver Development Scholarship, Pitfit Driver Memorial Scholarship, and she was Featured Driver by the Women in the Winners Circle Foundation.
Currently, Smutny is looking forward to making the transition from open-wheel to full-body stock cars and has teamed up with Activ8 Driver Development Program to help continue her success on and off the track. |
